Gil is the standard currency in Eorzea. It can be earned by completing quests, FATEs, duties, and other activities and can be used to purchase items from shops and from the market board.

History[ | ]

The currencies created and traded by past civilizations lost their value when the Sixth Umbral Calamity struck, destroying the landscape and engulfing once-proud nations of magi and wise men. As a result, Eorzea's economy reverted to a prehistoric system of barter and commerce. The currencies of Mhach and Amdapor returned to limited use following the start of the Sixth Astral Era, with their values generally based on the value of the metals that made up each one.

Sharlayan and Ishgard were quick to imitate certain efforts to manufacture their own currencies when city-states and countries began to grow. No attempt was made to establish a global standard because there was little to no international communication during this time period. As a result, several currencies were used throughout the country for years. In the years of peace that followed the Autumn War, this altered. As international trade and diplomacy expanded, there was a greater need for a single global currency for practical economic reasons.

The leaders of Eorzea's six largest city-states met in the year 1477 of the Sixth Astral Era and decided to create a common currency that would be accepted throughout the whole realm. Gil, a coinage formerly in use by the ancient Allagan empire, was thus reinstated as the country's official currency.

Design[ | ]

Historically, coins generally included artwork based on national heroes, religious symbols, or leaders. In order to prevent unnecessary dispute, experts from all countries decided to adopt neutral designs with the introduction of gil as a universal currency. These designs are ones that are not steeped in the traditions of any one culture or nation. In order to do this, the face of Nymeia the Spinner was picked to adorn the 100 gil coin.

The grand companies' commemorative one-gil coins for Foundation Day, which bear portraits of the heads of the four city-states, serve as an exception to the rule.[1]
