Garlemald is a nation on Ilsabard and is the seat of the Garlean Empire.

Nearly three-quarters of the Three Great Continents are claimed by the Garlean Empire; the only area not yet fully under imperial control is Aldenard. Garlemald was a small, uninhabited republic that possessed only a small portion of Ilsabard's northern territory until about fifty years ago. But in the course of one generation, a golden age of technology has arrived, and with a bright young legatus, Garlemald now stands on the cusp of controlling all of Hydaelyn.[1]

History[ | ]

(See also: History of Garlemald)

Garlemald's origins begin with a collective of banished peoples from Ilsabard. Forced to find refuge in the northern territories, the Garleans led difficult lives through harsh winters until their transformative discovery of ceruleum, leading to the development of magitek technology. Today, Garlemald has the strongest military power in all of Eorzea, laying claim to most nations across continents.

The Empire[ | ]

Imperial Court[ | ]

All of Garlean royalty are descended from Galvus. Apart from "zos," "yae" refers to male members of the royal family who are next in line, as well as the mother and wife of the Emperor. Additionally, there is the title of "wir," which refers to female heirs and their spouses who are not entitled to the throne. All of the royal family's members are thought to reside in the opulent imperial palace in Garlemald and own magnificent villas outside of the city.

The Senate[ | ]

Having ruled Garlemald during the Republic's era, the Senate continues to advise the emperor and his court despite its current weakened power. Members range from upper level public officials titled "fae," to the highest-ranking princeps senatus "iyl." The Senate also holds the ability to remove the magistrates: the consul, praetor, tribunus plebis, aedilis, and quaestor, though it hasn't yet used this right.

The Magitek Academy[ | ]

The Magitek Academy was founded as a research institution and an engineering school right after Solus Galvus was elevated to dictator. Titled "nan," the head of this institution is also the country's chief engineer.

Selected exceptional candidates from throughout the Empire are admitted into the Academy only in small numbers. Few people will even succeed in finishing their six-year program of study. Determined and intelligent graduates are offered the option of joining the army as magitek technicians or pursuing further studies. Among the graduates of the school are Cid nan Garlond and Nero tol Scaeva.

Social Hierarchy[ | ]

The Garlean Empire has a rigid and well-organized social structure. When Garleans reach adulthood, a title between their surname and forename indicates their social standing. For example, the "zos" in Solus zos Galvus designates him as Emperor. A person's title also changes if their rank or occupation does. Once, the second Emperor was called Varis yae Galvus, with the "yae" designating him as a descendant of the royal dynasty.

When someone holds two or more titles, they are given the higher title. Varis could have also been called "van Galvus" because he was a legatus, but royal blood was more important than rank, thus he was still referred to as "yae Galvus."[2]

Imperial Army[ | ]

(See also: Imperial Garlean Army)

The pride of Garlemald, the Imperial Army considers itself to be the strongest military force in Hydaelyn, and given its strong command and magnificent warmachina, it might well be. Nevertheless, as most soldiers are conscripted from annexed territory, there is always a chance of insurrection among the ranks. In order to maintain peace overseas, the army consequently takes great care to never station personnel in their home provinces. This policy reduces the likelihood of rebellion and desertion while turning the families of soldiers into captives held by unknown persons.
