There have been references throughout the history of Eorzea of beings called the Ascians, who sow discord by teaching beast tribes how to summon primals and essentially igniting wars across several continents.

The Ascians plotted to cause a phenomenon known as the Rejoining—a type of dimensional compression desired by their deity Zodiark—in order to bring about the Calamities, which were once thought to be natural occurrences, according to research by the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
